This year marks the final appearance of the Royal Canadian Air Force's beloved Snowbirds aerobatics team in the city until their aging fleet is officially replaced in the 2030s.
What Happened
Running daily from noon to 3:40 p.m. through Monday, the iconic Labour Day weekend tradition features precision nine-jet formations, alongside demonstrations from an RCAF CF-18 and an RCMP Black Hawk helicopter. A planned appearance by the U.S. F-16 demonstration team was dropped at the last minute due to schedule changes.
However, the spotlight remains firmly on the Snowbirds and their historic CT-114 Tutor jets. Ordered as military training aircraft in 1961, these planes have anchored the stunt team for over five decades.
Why It Matters
Military officials have flagged for years that the Tutor jets have far exceeded their operational lifespans. Defence Minister David McGuinty announced plans to ground the aircraft following a final summer schedule ending at the Grey Cup in Calgary.
