Toronto FC is proving they have the grit to salvage their season. On Saturday night at BMO Field, the Reds clawed their way back to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against a dangerous New York City FC (NYCFC) side.
The result extends Toronto's unbeaten streak to five matches, marking their longest run without a loss since late July.
How the Match Unfolded
NYCFC struck first in the 29th minute. Argentine midfielder Nicolas Fernandez launched a powerful, low strike from well outside the penalty area that beat Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran. It was Fernandez’s 14th goal of the MLS season, keeping him firmly in the Golden Boot conversation.
But Toronto FC responded with dominant play in the second half. In the 70th minute, second-half substitute Daniel Salloi connected with a brilliant pass from winger Theo Corbeanu. Salloi beat NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese to the ball, slotting it into the lower-left corner to level the score.
The Health and Chemistry Factor
A major catalyst behind Toronto's recent resurgence is player availability. After battling depth issues for much of the year, head coach Robin Fraser finally has a healthy squad at his disposal.
"I think as guys are now getting healthy, we’re seeing more belief, more conviction," Fraser noted post-match. "Training is sharper, training is better. I think it’s raising the level of everyone."
That heightened level is translating into on-field chemistry, particularly between Salloi and Corbeanu. Salloi’s equalizer marked the second straight game where the duo linked up for a crucial goal.
"He’s always putting himself in good positions," Corbeanu said of Salloi. "I feel like I’m building a good connection with him."
Why It Matters
While a five-game unbeaten run (two wins, three draws) is a massive positive for Toronto's playoff hopes, Coach Fraser is quick to point out a lingering issue: the team is playing from behind far too often.
Struggling to control matches from the opening whistle forces the team to expend massive amounts of energy just to salvage points. To climb higher in the Eastern Conference standings, Toronto must find a way to strike first and play with a lead.
