Why The Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake is Changing Everything on Switch 2

Nintendo has officially blown the lid off its latest Direct presentation, celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda with massive hardware and software reveals. At the center of the excitement is a faithful yet modernized remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time built specifically for the upcoming Switch 2.

What's New in the Ocarina of Time Remake

Producer Eiji Aonuma took to the stream to show off the first gameplay footage of the remake, starting in the nostalgic Kokiri Forest. While the classic environments, characters, and puzzles remain instantly recognizable, the game features a significantly more realistic graphical style and major quality-of-life upgrades.

• Modernized Movement: Link can finally jump on command across gaps, swim with a fast-swim mechanic, and dive underwater. Players can also hold a button to sprint across Hyrule Field.
• Microphone Mechanics: In a clever nod to the original, you can now hum or blow into the console's microphone to play melodies on the Ocarina to call Epona and solve puzzles.
• Full Voice Acting: Key characters feature full voice acting in cutscenes, bringing entirely new emotional depth to classic interactions.
• Retained Nostalgia: Iconic items like the Slingshot make a return, and developers intentionally kept transition loading screens between certain areas to preserve the classic vibe.

Release Date and Special Edition Hardware

The Ocarina of Time remake will launch globally on November 5, 2026, arriving slightly earlier than previous insider leaks suggested. While official retail pricing has not been fully locked into eShop fronts, a brief leak on the Australian Nintendo store points to an approximate 60 Euro price tag.

For collectors, Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch 2: The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition, alongside a custom Triforce-themed Pro Controller and carrying case, releasing on October 29. New Young Link and Young Zelda amiibos will also launch to unlock special in-game masks.

The Live-Action Movie Update

Fans waiting for the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film received a concrete release date of April 30, 2027. Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the movie will simply be titled The Legend of Zelda without a subtitle, teasing that fans will understand why once they experience the film next year.
