The Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings across significant portions of the UK, highlighting a “small risk of flooding and disruption.”

The alerts are set to impact the West and East Midlands, the North West, South East, South West, eastern England, and parts of Wales. The initial warning window runs from 3 am until 10 pm, followed by a secondary alert spanning the same hours the next day.

These severe weather warnings arrive directly on the heels of back-to-back heatwaves that left the ground hard and dry, placing roughly 70 percent of England and Wales under official drought conditions.

Why It Matters

The sudden shift from extreme heat to torrential storms underscores a volatile meteorological pattern. Provisional Met Office data reveals that the UK’s mean temperature for meteorological summer is currently sitting at 16.48C—nearly 1.9C above the 1991–2020 average. England alone recorded a mean summer temperature of 18.19C, marking a notable 2.46C spike above average.

Furthermore, 2026 has smashed climate records by becoming the first year to see three separate days where temperatures breached the 37C threshold. July also registered as the driest month since records began in 1836 for both England and Wales. When baked-soil terrain meets sudden, heavy rainfall, the risk of flash flooding multiplies rapidly, threatening infrastructure and agriculture.

Experts emphasize that these extreme fluctuations are part of a broader, long-term climate trend. The UK's weather patterns are shifting toward warmer, wetter conditions, making intense heatwaves and subsequent flooding events more frequent and severe.

Data shows that the average length of warm spells has more than doubled, increasing from 5.3 days between 1961 and 1990 to over 13 days in recent decades. Compounding this, Met Office Hadley Centre models warn that while 40C days remain rare today, a high-emissions trajectory could push the UK into experiencing 40C heat every three to four years by 2100.

Rainfall is projected to track above average for the time of year, though southern regions may see some drier, settled interludes.
