The digital world was left in shock earlier this month when celebrity blogger Perez Hilton was hospitalized following a distressing incident on a TikTok livestream. Now, stepping forward to clear the air amid a wave of online misinformation, his sister, Barbara Lavandeira, has shared the harrowing details of that fateful day—revealing that she scarcely recognized her own brother.
In a candid interview with Page Six, Lavandeira recounted the events of August 4, describing it as "forever one of the darkest days my family and I have ever experienced."
Inside the Terrifying Discovery
Lavandeira revealed that alarm bells went off when she noticed Hilton's bedroom door was unusually shut. Upon unlocking it and checking the home, she found the 48-year-old internet pioneer in severe distress.
"I didn't recognize my brother when I looked at him. I saw it in his eyes. They didn't look the same. Then, a split second later, he smiled at me. It felt like I was staring at someone else," she shared.
Acting quickly to protect Hilton's three children, Lavandeira immediately removed them from the home, placed them in the care of another adult, and called 911 before returning alone to assist her brother. Emergency responders transported Hilton to a local hospital via ambulance. He currently remains hospitalized in Florida under the state's Baker Act for involuntary psychiatric evaluation, facing a long road of physical and mental recovery that will include upcoming surgeries.
A Battle With Severe Depression
Far from coming out of nowhere, Lavandeira explained that her brother's crisis followed an exceptionally grueling period. Hilton had voluntarily checked himself into a hospital for severe depression just days prior, after battling a brutal cascade of health issues over the past year—including severe flu complications, a perforated ulcer, and sepsis.
"He told us that a few days earlier, he had felt empty, hopeless and like he was a burden on everyone," Lavandeira said, noting that he had just returned to regular therapy sessions and was gearing up for an intensive outpatient program.
As law enforcement, platform moderators, and family members grapple with the fallout of the incident, TikTok confirmed that its automated systems flagged the broadcast, though a "moderator error" delayed the stream's eventual termination before the account was banned.
The Family's Plea for Privacy
In the wake of the tragedy, Hilton's inner circle—including podcast co-host Chris Booker—has rallied around him with messages of love and support. Meanwhile, his family is fiercely guarding his privacy, pleading with media outlets and photo agencies to stay away from their home, leave his young children alone, and rely solely on official updates posted to Hilton's website.
"We are grateful that Perez was able to spend time with his mother and sister," the family shared in a previous statement, emphasizing that his focus remains entirely on healing.
