A record-breaking El Niño climate driver is rapidly heating up the Pacific Ocean, pushing sea temperatures in the central tropical Pacific toward historic highs. Forecasters predict relative ocean temperatures could surge by a staggering 3.6 degrees by November.
This dramatic increase would shatter the previous record of a 2.65-degree rise set back in 1902. Weakened trade winds are causing warm surface water to pool across the central and eastern Pacific, shutting down the cold, nutrient-rich upwelling essential for marine ecosystems.
Why NSW Must Prepare for Severe Weather
While El Niño typically brings drier, hotter conditions, authorities warn that severe storms can still ignite abruptly. Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib has urged residents across New South Wales to tie down loose items and prepare for a volatile spring season.
“Things can happen really quickly with the weather,” Dib cautioned, stressing that the public should look out for more than just bushfire risks.
During the previous storm season alone, NSW State Emergency Service crews responded to nearly 19,000 emergencies. This included about 7,000 calls for fallen trees and over 6,000 for damaged or torn-off roofs. Officials are urging residents to clear gutters, secure outdoor property, and finalize emergency plans immediately.
Global Marine and Ecological Impact
Beyond land-based storms, the massive system is triggering widespread disruptions offshore. NASA’s PACE satellite has detected a notable drop in phytoplankton, the foundational building block of the marine food web.
The ripple effects extend directly to global fisheries. Operations in Peru—which accounts for roughly 20 percent of the world's fishmeal and oil production through anchovy fishing—have faced recent suspensions due to declining fish stocks.
Additionally, NOAA forecasts a 90 percent chance of widespread coral bleaching across the central and eastern tropical Pacific over the next four months, matching the exact warm-water footprint of this intense El Niño event. Experts warn that the system's global impacts will continue to reverberate well into early 2027.
