Training camp intensity is reaching a boiling point across the NFL, and Las Vegas Raiders star defensive end Maxx Crosby is right at the center of the action. Known for his relentless motor and physical style, Crosby's approach to practice has once again sparked heated reactions from quarterbacks trying to protect their throwing arms.

What Happened in Camp

During a joint practice with the Houston Texans, tempers flared briefly after defenders got a bit too close to the quarterback during a drill. While it didn't escalate into a full-scale brawl like the earlier August donnybrook involving Crosby and his own teammates, it was enough to prompt a direct and fiery response on the field.

For quarterbacks, the throwing arm is sacred territory. Any unintended contact during a routine practice session carries the risk of a derailed season.

The Battle Over the Red Jersey

Quarterbacks wear red non-contact jerseys for a reason, but fierce competitors like Crosby often blur the line between a controlled practice and live-game pressure.

Speaking after practice, the quarterback explained the boundary he tries to set with elite pass rushers. While bodily contact to the ribs or hips is acceptable—and even helpful for simulating real-game pass rush scenarios—contact to the throwing arm is off-limits.

“My elbow got hit,” the quarterback noted, explaining his frustration. “I joke with Maxx, and I say, ‘You can touch me anywhere you want, just don’t touch my arm.’ You want to bump me in the ribs? Fine. I think if anything, hitting me in the hips or the ribs is actually good because it simulates what I need to feel.”

Why It Matters

Incidents like this highlight the delicate balance NFL teams must maintain during training camp. Coaches want maximum intensity to prepare for the regular season, but preserving the health of key starters remains the absolute top priority.

Players like Crosby thrive on pushing the envelope, forcing offenses to execute under maximum stress. However, as the regular season approaches, maintaining mutual respect between elite pass rushers and franchise signal-callers becomes vital to preventing unnecessary injuries before the games even count.
