The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a late-season roster dilemma after the Cincinnati Reds placed veteran slugger Eugenio Suárez on waivers. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the move, which puts Suárez on a 48-hour waiver period.
For the Blue Jays, who are right in the thick of a tight American League playoff race, adding a proven home-run threat sounds tempting. Suárez recently reminded everyone of his pop by hitting a ninth-inning grand slam to lift the Reds over the Giants.
Why It Matters for Toronto
The Blue Jays desperately need an offensive jolt down the stretch. Toronto ranks near the bottom of Major League Baseball in several key offensive categories, including home runs (125), runs scored (527), and wRC+ (92).
Suárez offers undeniable pedigree. While his numbers are down overall in 2026—batting with 19 home runs and a .705 OPS—he has heated up recently with five homers and an .862 OPS in August. Financially, adding him is manageable. He is on a one-year, $15 million deal with roughly $2.5 million remaining before hitting free agency. Any player claimed before September 1 remains eligible for the postseason.
The Roster Fit Problem
Despite the clear need for offense, finding a spot for Suárez on the field is complicated. Now 35 years old, Suárez is primarily a designated hitter who can occasionally play third base.
The Blue Jays already feature George Springer at designated hitter and Kazuma Okamoto at third base. Meanwhile, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. holds down first base. Because Suárez, Springer, Okamoto, and Guerrero are all right-handed hitters, there is no natural platoon fit.
Adding Suárez would likely relegate him to a bench bat role. Furthermore, Toronto's 40-man roster is currently full, meaning an outside addition would require cutting an existing player. Internal options like Davis Schneider or Sean Keys do not require a 40-man roster move.
Ultimately, while Suárez represents intriguing injury insurance as active rosters expand to 28, the Blue Jays' best path forward may rely on their current bats breaking out during the final month.
