Rock icon Courtney Love is opening up about a terrifying chapter of her life that she kept entirely hidden from the public for years.
In a raw and candid video shared on Instagram, the 62-year-old Hole frontwoman revealed that she spent a significant amount of time hospitalized starting in 2019, battling a severe illness that brought her dangerously close to death.
"I went to England in 2019, and when I went there, you know, my body just exploded," Love told her followers. "It just exploded. And I was in hospitals a lot. I almost died. I lost all my hair. I was about 100 pounds. And they told me I was going to die, and I didn’t believe them."
While Love chose not to publicly identify the specific medical condition or illnesses she was fighting, she credits her stubborn defiance for saving her life. Drawing parallels to her childhood—where she constantly questioned adults who tried to distort reality—Love said she simply refused to accept the terminal prognosis given by her doctors.
"When they said, 'You’re going to die,' I just didn’t believe them. And, somehow, I got better. I’m healthy, which is amazing," she shared. "I just wasn’t public about being sick. I don’t want to be public. I’m fine now."
Channeling Survival Into Art
Despite the immense physical toll—which included dropping to 100 pounds and losing her hair—Love channeled her ordeal into creative fuel. The much-anticipated new album she has been teasing to fans was actually written and recorded during her darkest days in and out of hospital rooms.
In the caption accompanying her video, Love admitted that she genuinely thought the project would be her swan song.
"When I made it, I believed this was my last record," she wrote. "So, I made the record I always wanted to make. I was in the hospital mostly, but when I wasn't, all I did was write & record it."
This upcoming release marks a monumental moment for fans of the legendary rocker. Love hasn't released a full-length album since Hole’s Nobody’s Daughter back in 2010.
What's Next for the Rock Legend?
Now fully recovered and healthy, Love expressed a strong desire to return to the live stage and tour once again, emphasizing that creating and performing music remains an essential part of her life and well-being.
As she prepares to step back into the spotlight and share her deeply personal new music with the world, Love asked her loyal fanbase for just a little more patience. If this album truly was forged in the crucible of a near-death experience, music lovers everywhere are undoubtedly in for a powerful, unfiltered masterpiece.
