A routine police checkpoint in the German city of Dortmund turned into a scene of chaos on Wednesday when the driver of a high-powered white Mercedes AMG chose violence over compliance. The dramatic escape, which was captured on video, has triggered an intense police manhunt across the Ruhr valley metropolis.
The Violent Escape Captured on Video
The incident unfolded on a hardware store parking lot in Dortmund. According to video footage obtained by the German outlet BILD, several patrol cars had successfully blocked the exit of the lot to contain the white Mercedes AMG.
Plainclothes officers, with service weapons drawn, cautiously approached the vehicle. Instead of surrendering, the driver slammed on the gas pedal. The heavy sports car lunged forward, striking one of the undercover officers who was attempting to stop the vehicle.
The impact knocked the investigator to the ground, leaving him injured. Without slowing down, the driver sped out of the parking lot, ran a red light, and disappeared into city traffic.
Helicopter Search and a 160 km/h Clue
Following the escape, Dortmund police launched an intense search operation that lasted late into the night. A police helicopter was deployed to scan the city from above, searching for the distinctive white vehicle.
While the suspect remains at large, authorities have secured a major lead. Shortly after the confrontation, the Mercedes AMG was caught by a speed camera traveling at approximately 160 km/h (nearly 100 mph) within city limits—far exceeding the local speed limit. This speed trap photo provides investigators with a clear image of the vehicle and likely the driver's face, significantly narrowing down their search.
Current Status of the Investigation
The injured plainclothes officer was treated at the scene and transported to a local Dortmund hospital by ambulance.
Despite the life-threatening nature of fleeing a scene by striking an officer with a vehicle, the legal classification of the incident remains surprisingly moderate. Currently, Dortmund police are investigating the act as physical assault (Körperverletzung) rather than attempted homicide (versuchtes Tötungsdelikt).
The investigation is ongoing as police work to apprehend the suspect using the speed camera evidence and eyewitness accounts from the scene.
