FC Bayern Munich fans eagerly awaiting the return of Jamal Musiala will have to wait a little longer. The 23-year-old playmaker was ruled out of Bayern's DFB-Pokal clash against VfL Osnabrück.
Ahead of the match, manager Vincent Kompany and Sporting Director Max Eberl provided a detailed update on Musiala’s condition, introducing a specific medical milestone the midfielder must hit before returning to competitive action.
The Diagnosis Behind the Absence
Musiala’s current spell on the sidelines stems from two sudden collapses during pre-season friendlies against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim. Medical examinations revealed the cause to be "absences"—brief lapses of consciousness triggered by a temporary neurological dysfunction.
The German international has been undergoing specialist treatment for some time, with doctors recently adjusting and increasing his medication to better manage the condition.
The "Seizure Reduction" Strategy
While the ultimate goal is to eliminate these neurological lapses entirely, Bayern's management and medical team are realistic about the path forward. Max Eberl detailed the specific medical threshold they are targeting, referred to in German medicine as Anfallsarmut (seizure reduction or achieving a low-frequency state).
"With Jamal, we are trying to establish a state of seizure reduction after these last two incidents," Eberl explained. "While complete freedom from these episodes is our ultimate wish, it is difficult to guarantee immediately. First, we need to minimize the frequency. Once that state is stabilized, he can stand on the pitch for us again."
Essentially, Bayern will not clear Musiala for competitive matches until his episodes are suppressed to a safe, highly controlled frequency.
When Will Musiala Play Again?
Despite the caution, there is plenty of room for optimism. Musiala has made significant strides in his recovery. After starting with individual drills, he has integrated back into full team training. He even completed Sunday’s secret tactical session with no issues, leaving a strong impression on the coaching staff.
His progress has raised questions about whether he could feature in the upcoming Bundesliga fixture against Schalke. Vincent Kompany remains optimistic but careful not to rush his young star.
"Maybe," Kompany stated. "But I don’t want to put more pressure on the boy. He is doing well, he is improving. If it continues like this, it won't take long."
