Preseason is supposed to be about building chemistry, testing tactics, and getting players up to match fitness. But for Bayern Munich's new manager Vincent Kompany, their latest outing in the Telekom Cup proved to be a classic double-edged sword.
While the Bavarian giants maintained their undefeated preseason streak with an entertaining 3-1 victory over Leipzig, the tactical triumph has been completely overshadowed by a looming injury crisis.
Here is what went down, what went right, and why Bayern fans are holding their breath.
The Luis Díaz Spark: A Winger in Peak Form
With Harry Kane and Michael Olise left out of the squad after only recently joining team training, Vincent Kompany rolled out a mixed starting eleven. The spotlight was firmly on Luis Díaz, the most experienced forward in a makeshift front three alongside youngsters Binder and Ibrahimovic.
And "Lucho" did not disappoint.
Just 14 minutes into the match, Díaz showcased the world-class technique that made him a priority target. After a heavy rebound from the Leipzig defense, the Colombian winger controlled a difficult, high-velocity ball with his chest and unleashed a perfectly placed cross-shot into the bottom-left corner. Leipzig keeper Vandevoordt stood no chance.
It was Díaz's second goal in as many friendly matches, proving that he is already dialed in for the upcoming campaign.
The Mid-Game Drama and Leipzig's Pushback
The match was far from a comfortable cruise. Leipzig, managed by Martín Demichelis, came out swinging in the second half.
After legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer pulled off a string of spectacular saves to deny Bakayoko, Leipzig finally found their breakthrough in the 52nd minute. A brilliant cross from the left wing found Brajan Gruda, who finished clinically to level the score at 1-1.
However, Bayern’s response was nearly instantaneous. Just five minutes later, Pavlovic sliced open the Leipzig midfield with a sublime assist to 23-year-old newcomer Nathaniel Brown, who confidently restored Bayern's lead.
The Bitter-Sweet Finale: Debut Joy and Injury Nightmare
The game’s final quarter brought both the best and worst of football for Bayern Munich.
In the 70th minute, Kompany made a sweep of tactical changes, introducing marquee midfielder Jamal Musiala and giving a highly anticipated debut to Moroccan reinforcement Ismael Saibari.
The impact was immediate. Ten minutes after stepping onto the pitch, Saibari set up Musiala for a clinical goal, extending Bayern's lead to 3-1.
But the joy was short-lived.
By the 85th minute, Musiala was forced to leave the pitch due to an apparent physical issue. While he walked off under his own power as a precautionary measure—replaced by 18-year-old Bara—it sparked immediate panic.
Musiala's injury scare followed an earlier blow in the 9th minute when Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer was forced off with muscle discomfort, replaced early by Sacha Boey.

What This Means for Vincent Kompany's Debut Season
On paper, Bayern Munich is doing exactly what is expected: winning matches, scoring beautiful goals, and integrating new signings like Brown and Saibari seamlessly.
However, the real test is just around the corner. Bayern faces one final friendly against Heidenheim 1846 on Tuesday, August 18, before their first official competitive match of the season—the highly anticipated DFL-Supercup against arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund on August 22.
If the injuries to Laimer and Musiala prove to be serious, Kompany’s tactical depth will be tested far sooner than he ever anticipated. Bayern has the talent, but as this preseason clash proved, staying healthy might be their biggest opponent of all.
