Apple's highly anticipated fall launch event is just around the corner, scheduled for Wednesday, September 9. Tech enthusiasts are expecting major announcements, including the flagship iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the Apple Watch Series 12, and potentially Apple's first-ever folding smartphone.
However, if you plan to be among the first to buy these new devices, you will need to adjust your calendar. Apple is reportedly deviating from its traditional release schedule.
A Departure From Tradition
Historically, Apple opens pre-orders for its new hardware on the Friday immediately following its keynote event. This year, that would have been September 11.
Instead, Apple is delaying the pre-order window by 24 hours. Pre-sales are set to kick off on Saturday, September 12.
In addition to the date change, Apple is adjusting the launch time. Instead of the usual early morning rush at 5:00 AM PT, pre-orders will reportedly go live at midnight PT (3:00 AM ET) on Saturday.
Why Apple Is Shifting the Date
The reason for this scheduling adjustment is respect. Friday, September 11, is a day of remembrance and mourning in the United States.
This is not the first time Apple has altered its launch window for this reason. Exactly 11 years ago, Apple moved pre-orders for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus to Saturday, September 12, 2015, to avoid launching commercial activity on the solemn anniversary.
What About the Foldable iPhone?
While the delayed Saturday pre-order window will apply to the standard iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple Watch Series 12, those eyeing the rumored foldable iPhone Ultra may have an even longer wait.
Reports suggest that pre-orders for the folding device may not begin until late September. This phased rollout mirrors past launch disruptions, such as the pandemic-related delays of the iPhone 12 Mini and Pro Max in 2020, and the production bottlenecks that delayed the iPhone X in 2017.
For eager buyers, staying flexible is key. Setting your alarm for midnight PT on Friday night (technically Saturday morning) is your best bet to secure the latest Pro models on day one.
