What Happened
The body of 30-year-old British trekker Alexander Harris has been recovered in northern Pakistan following a massive multi-day search operation. Harris, originally from Birmingham and holding dual British and Irish citizenship, went missing on Saturday while descending from the summit of Musa Ka Musala, a 4,000-meter (13,000-foot) mountain in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Local authorities, including area deputy commissioner Khalid Iqbal, confirmed that Harris likely slipped and fell along a forested path. He had been living in Islamabad, where he worked for the global advisory firm Adam Smith International.
The Descent and Disappearance
Harris had set out early Saturday morning alongside a hiking companion to conquer the peak. After successfully reaching the summit and taking photos, the pair began their descent.
According to officials, the two hikers became separated due to a difference in pace. Harris moved ahead by about one to two kilometers just as adverse weather conditions, including rain, began to set in.
Despite offers from local hotel management for an official guide and police security, Harris reportedly declined assistance, believing he was sufficiently familiar with the area and failing to register the trip with local authorities.
The Search and Rescue Effort
Following his disappearance, a massive operation was launched involving between 250 and 300 personnel. Police, local volunteers, rescue teams, and members of Harris's own trail-running community scoured the steep terrain.
Operations faced severe obstacles due to heavy rain, fog, and poor visibility, which heavily limited the use of deployed search drones. Eventually, searchers located his body on a forest path.
Tributes and Community Impact
Colleagues at Adam Smith International expressed profound grief, remembering Harris as a dedicated team member who deeply appreciated Pakistan's culture, learned Urdu, and loved nature.
The Margalla Trail Runners, a local running group Harris frequently ran with, also paid tribute, remembering him as a passionate athlete. The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is actively supporting Harris's grieving family through local consular channels.
