If you regularly chew sugar-free gum, use whitening toothpaste, or enjoy low-calorie ice cream, you have likely consumed xylitol. This widely used sugar alcohol is frequently marketed as a healthier, diabetic-friendly alternative to sugar.
However, a groundbreaking study presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) annual congress in Munich has raised major red flags, linking high levels of xylitol to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death.
The Shocking Numbers
In the largest study of its kind, researchers analyzed data from 17,710 individuals to understand the long-term health impacts of the sweetener. By comparing the 25% of participants with the highest blood levels of xylitol against the 25% with the lowest, the findings revealed a stark contrast:
- 57% Higher Risk: Those with the highest xylitol levels were 57% more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or die within six years.
- Long-Term Impact: Even looking back over 30 years, those with the highest levels remained 18% more likely to have experienced one of these major cardiovascular events.
- Dose-Dependent Threat: The results suggested a direct correlation: higher blood concentration levels of xylitol consistently equaled a higher risk of cardiac events.
Crucially, these risks remained consistent regardless of age, sex, or underlying health factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI).
How It Affects the Body
Xylitol is found naturally in tiny amounts in some fruits and vegetables, but commercially manufactured products often contain artificial doses up to 1,000 times higher.
According to the study's author, Dr. Marco Witkowski from the Charité university hospital in Berlin, the sweetener may actively change how our blood behaves. Previous research from his team showed that xylitol can increase the ability of blood platelets to clump together, significantly boosting the risk of dangerous blood clots.
Is It Time to Panic?
While the findings are alarming, health experts urge consumers to look at the nuance:
