A dramatic police pursuit on Australia’s Sunshine Coast took a terrifying turn when a suspect allegedly opened fire on a police helicopter.
The incident, which authorities described as "extremely dangerous," has ended with two related men in custody facing a combined 45 charges after a chaotic multi-day crime spree.
How the Spree Began
The situation began on Wednesday in Childers, Queensland, when 12 firearms were stolen from a local residence. The suspects fled the scene in a utility vehicle that had been reported stolen days earlier.
By Thursday morning, Queensland Police spotted the suspects in Nambour. When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the driver drove directly at them. Police managed to arrest one of the suspects, 44-year-old Micheal John Jackson, after he exited the vehicle.
However, the second suspect, 21-year-old Jaylan Walter Jackson, fled north toward Noosa, triggering an intense air and ground pursuit.
Under Fire on the Sunshine Coast
As Queensland’s POLAIR helicopter and ground units tracked the fleeing vehicle, the pursuit reached a dangerous climax in Noosa Springs.
After dumping the stolen car, the 21-year-old suspect allegedly escalated his attempt to evade capture:
- Attacking air support: Witnesses reported seeing the suspect fire a rifle directly at the tracking police helicopter.
- Targeting ground officers: The suspect allegedly pointed his firearm at a police officer inside a nearby patrol vehicle.
- Carjacking: He then forced his way into a local home, held a female resident at gunpoint, stole her car keys, and fled in her vehicle.
Despite the immediate threat, police coordinated a swift response, intercepting the third vehicle and arresting the suspect without any reported injuries.
The Charges and the Recovery
During the arrest, police recovered 10 of the 12 stolen firearms inside the vehicle. Authorities are still searching for the remaining two weapons.
The two men, who are known to police, face serious legal consequences at the Maroochydore Magistrates Court:
- Jaylan Jackson (21) faces 30 offences, including discharging a weapon in public, arson, and three counts of serious assault of a police officer.
- Micheal Jackson (44) faces 15 offences, including arson, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and serious assault of a police officer.
Local police praised the "great courage and bravery" of the responding officers in resolving a highly volatile situation safely.
