Hegseth shared an image of a young Canadian cadet and her instructor from a training center in Vernon, B.C., drawing intense online mockery, body-shaming, and swift condemnation from Canadian officials.

On Monday, Hegseth shared a photo of two female uniform-clad members of the Cadet Training Centre on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption "this is real" alongside a Canadian flag. The post prompted a flood of derogatory comments targeting the physical appearance of the individuals.
While the Pentagon defended the post, stating "the X post speaks for itself," the Army Cadet League of Canada condemned the online harassment. They emphasized that the national cadet program—which serves youth aged 12 to 18—focuses on leadership and community service, making derogatory remarks directed at youth entirely unacceptable.
How Canada Is Responding
Canada’s top military commander, Gen. Jennie Carignan, stated that the military is actively supporting the affected members. Speaking from a defence chief conference in Victoria, B.C., Carignan confirmed that the cadet and her instructor will have full agency to decide how, or if, they want to respond.
Canadian political leaders did not hold back:

- B.C. Premier David Eby called the post and its subsequent defense "an embarrassment," describing the current American leadership as "amateur-hour."
- Conservative MP Garnett Genuis reminded Hegseth of the shared military history, noting that cadets are youth volunteers, not active military, and pointed out that 158 Canadian soldiers died in Afghanistan supporting the U.S.
