Apple's upcoming iPhone launch is just around the corner, and the rumor mill is spinning at high speed. While incremental updates have defined recent flagship releases, early leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will introduce some of the most substantial hardware changes in the lineup's history.
Here is a breakdown of the major upgrades coming to Apple's next-generation flagship.
A Massive Camera Overhaul
Apple historically spaces out its major camera redesigns, but the iPhone 18 Pro is poised for a significant physical change. According to prominent insider leaks, the main camera module is getting a major enlargement.
This hardware expansion reportedly translates to an increase of over 2mm in the thickness of the phone’s aluminum back panel. This extra depth is expected to house a highly anticipated variable aperture feature. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously teased that the iPhone 18 Pro will deliver some of the most significant camera hardware upgrades Apple has ever attempted, giving users unprecedented control over depth of field and low-light performance.
Custom Silicon and Record-Breaking Battery
For years, Apple has relied on Qualcomm to supply its 5G modems. The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to officially break that streak for the flagship tier by transitioning to Apple’s in-house C2 5G modem.
This move follows a gradual rollout of Apple's proprietary C-series modems, which debuted in lower-tier models. Bringing the C2 modem to the Pro lineup represents a massive step toward complete hardware independence.
This custom modem, combined with the power-efficient architecture of the upcoming A20 Pro chip, will drastically reduce energy consumption. Consequently, users can expect the best battery life of any iPhone to date. The iPhone 18 Pro Max will take this even further, with regulatory filings pointing to a physical battery that is roughly 10% larger than its predecessor.
A Sleeker Design and Bold New Color
Beyond internal processing power, the iPhone 18 Pro will feature noticeable aesthetic tweaks:
- Shrinking the Island: The divisive Dynamic Island is reportedly getting its first major size reduction, shrinking by roughly 35% to free up valuable screen real estate.
- A Pro First Colorway: Following the massive popularity of the previous generation's Cosmic Orange, Apple is introducing a deep Burgundy/Dark Cherry colorway. This marks the first time a red hue has been featured on Apple's premium "Pro" lineup.
With a smaller screen cutout, a custom-built cellular modem, and a massive camera upgrade, the iPhone 18 Pro is shaping up to be far more than just a minor annual refresh.
