Santa Cruz has done it. By grabbing the eighth and final ticket to the Série C promotion quadrangular, the Pernambuco giants have breathed new life into their season.

It was a dramatic journey that relied on a tense final-day draw against Anápolis, a bit of luck, and even an unlikely hero in Amazonas goalkeeper Axel Lopes, whose performance in another match helped seal Santa Cruz's fate.

Now, coach Cristian de Souza’s men are officially in the final fight for a spot in Série B.

What Happened

With the regular season in the rearview mirror, a "brand new championship" begins. Santa Cruz has been placed in a four-team group alongside Botafogo-PB, Maringá, and Floresta.

The teams will play each other in a double round-robin format (home and away). The top two teams at the end of this stage will earn automatic promotion to the second division.

In a fascinating twist of fate, Santa Cruz faced all three of these opponents on the road during the first phase—and managed to draw every single match.

The Rivals and the Road Ahead

As the quadrangular kicks off, the Tricolor will rely on lessons learned from those previous road trips:

  • Botafogo-PB (Group Favorites): The regular-season leaders finished with 33 points. Santa Cruz’s most recent match against them was a chaotic 2-2 draw in João Pessoa. Off-field security concerns have already prompted local authorities to recommend "single-crowd" restrictions for their upcoming playoff clashes.
  • Maringá (4th Place): Santa Cruz earned a 1-1 draw against them early in Cristian de Souza's tenure. Maringá has since changed managers, replacing Moisés Egert with Ivan Campanari.
  • Floresta (5th Place): Under former manager Claudinei Oliveira, Santa Cruz fought back to secure a 1-1 draw in Ceará back in April. Floresta has kept steady under long-time coach Leston Júnior.

What's Next for Santa Cruz

While qualifying is a massive relief, the team knows they advanced by the slimmest of margins, edging through solely on goal difference.

The heavy emotional toll of the regular season is behind them, but to secure promotion, Santa Cruz must improve their home form at the Arruda.

As defender William Alves pointed out, the slate is now clean: "Now, everything resets." Their quest for Série B starts this weekend.
