The mutant era has officially arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
During Disney’s highly anticipated D23 fan event, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige blew the roof off the hall by officially announcing the core cast for the upcoming, currently untitled X-Men reboot.
With a release date slated for May 2028 and director Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*) at the helm, this marks the first time the iconic mutant team will be fully integrated into Disney's MCU after the company acquired the film rights from 20th Century Fox back in 2019.

The Headliners: A New Phoenix and a Sinister Villain
The two biggest announcements of the night sent shockwaves through the fandom, bringing two massive star-power names into the MCU fold.
Sadie Sink is Jean Grey
Stranger Things breakout star Sadie Sink is officially stepping into the shoes of the powerful telepath Jean Grey. The character was actually teased to fans just last month during an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Taking the stage at D23, an excited Sink told the roaring crowd that it was "so wonderful" to finally be there and "talk about the character after months of speculation."
Adam Driver is Mr. Sinister
In a surprise virtual appearance, Star Wars alum Adam Driver joined the presentation via video-link. He has been cast as the villainous Nathaniel Milbury, better known to comic book fans as the geneticist mastermind Mr. Sinister.
Driver expressed his excitement about joining the MCU, noting:
"I've been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think we finally found the perfect film at the perfect time."
Meet the Rest of the New Mutant Lineup
Marvel didn't stop with Jean Grey and Mr. Sinister. They unveiled the actors taking on five other core X-Men members, blending rising young talent with acclaimed indie stars.
- Kit Connor as Cyclops (Scott Summers): The Heartstopper favorite is taking on the role of the optic-blasting field leader of the X-Men.
- Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier: The versatile actor will play the telepathic mentor and leader of the team.
- Samara Weaving as Emma Frost: Known for her stellar work in Ready or Not, Weaving will portray the brilliant and diamond-skinned telepath.
- Inde Navarrette as Rogue: The 13 Reasons Why actress will bring the power-absorbing Southern mutant to life.
- Maya Boyd as Storm (Ororo Munroe): The rising star will command the elements as the weather-controlling goddess.
Passing the Telepathic Torch
One of the most interesting talking points of the announcement is the casting of Christopher Abbott as Professor X.
The legendary Sir Patrick Stewart has long been the face of Charles Xavier, even returning for a multiverse cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans will get to see Stewart don the bald cap at least once more in the upcoming, highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.
However, Abbott will officially take over the role as the definitive MCU timeline's Professor X when the standalone film releases in 2028.
The Road to 2028: Why This Matters
This reboot marks a monumental shift for Marvel. The last standalone team movie, Dark Phoenix (2019), was released under 20th Century Fox to disappointing critical and commercial numbers. With Disney now steering the ship, this project represents a clean slate.
The hype is already building. Ahead of the X-Men's 2028 arrival, Disney is priming the box office pump with Avengers: Doomsday. At the same D23 event, Marvel showcased a brand-new trailer for the upcoming Avengers film, featuring a massive action sequence with Robert Downey Jr. (returning as Doctor Doom) going head-to-head with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.
The best news for mutant fans? This is only the beginning. Kevin Feige teased the D23 crowd by promising that "there is a lot more X-Men casting news to come" in the near future.
