Mallorca is experiencing a dramatic atmospheric turnaround. For the thousands of tourists wrapping up their summer holidays on the popular Spanish island, the sun-soaked paradise has temporarily transformed into a zone of intense weather warnings.
Following weeks of sweltering conditions, a sudden cold front is clashing with Mediterranean heat, triggering severe thunderstorms, torrential downpours, and violent wind gusts.
From Extreme Heat to Orange Alerts
Just hours ago, Mallorca was baking under extreme heat, with temperatures peaking near 39°C (102°F), particularly in the northern and northeastern regions. However, Spain’s state meteorological agency, Aemet, has now issued a high-level Orange Alert for parts of the island.
The primary concern is the sheer volume of rainfall expected in a very short window. Meteorological models project that up to 40 liters of rain per square meter could dump within a single hour. When combined with localized active thunderstorms, wind gusts are expected to scream across the island at speeds reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour (approx. 62 mph).
What to Expect on Friday
While the most turbulent conditions are expected to peak overnight, Friday daytime offers little immediate relief. Aemet has maintained a Yellow Alert between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM for several sectors of the island.
Key details for Friday’s forecast include:
- Continued Rainfall: Localized downpours could still dump up to 20 liters of rain per square meter per hour.
- Temperature Drop: Daytime highs will feel significantly cooler compared to earlier in the week, though they will hover in a still-warm 31°C to 34°C range.
- Intermittent Sunshine: It won't be a total washout. Breaks in the cloud cover will allow the sun to peek through periodically.
The Weekend Outlook: Is Sunshine Returning?
Fortunately for vacationers, this intense late-summer storm system appears to be a fast-moving event. Current meteorological data indicates that conditions will begin to stabilize significantly by Saturday.
As of now, Aemet has not issued any active weather alerts for the weekend. Saturday is expected to bring prolonged sunny intervals, though isolated showers or a stray thunderstorm cannot be entirely ruled out. Temperatures will remain highly pleasant, with Palma forecast to reach 33°C (91°F) and Alcúdia expected to hit a comfortable 32°C (90°F).
For travelers currently on the island, local authorities advise staying updated on regional weather alerts and exercising caution near coastal areas and low-lying roads prone to sudden flash flooding.
