The wait is finally over for Georgia Bulldogs fans. Game week has officially arrived in Athens, and the Bulldogs are set to open their 2026 season this Saturday at 3 p.m. ET when they host Tennessee State.
After weeks of highly competitive intrasquad scrimmages, Georgia is eager to test its physical run game and red-zone efficiency against an actual opponent. However, behind the scenes, head coach Kirby Smart has been navigating several notable roster adjustments, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
Key Defensive Shakeups and Departures
Georgia’s defense is expected to be elite, but the unit has already experienced some sudden changes. The defensive line took an unexpected hit just before the season began when defensive tackle Xzavier McLeod, who started six games last year, stepped away from the game of football.
To fill the void, the Bulldogs are turning to fresh talent. Freshman Swedish defensive lineman Sone has earned major praise from Smart after an outstanding fall camp and is locked in for a significant rotational role.
Additionally, the coaching staff moved defensive lineman Gibson to the interior while shifting Dean to outside linebacker to maximize versatility. Meanwhile, with Amaris Williams out, edge rusher Linton has emerged as a crucial breakout candidate.
Solving the Pass Rush Question
The biggest question mark hanging over Athens is the pass rush. Last season, the Bulldogs recorded an uncharacteristic 20.0 sacks. Smart has made it clear that simply creating pressure isn't enough anymore—this defense needs to finish plays and consistently bring opposing quarterbacks down.
Fortunately, the linebacker room is incredibly deep. Former five-star recruits Raylen Wilson, Mykel Williams, Chris Cole, and Jalon Walker lead the group. Keep an eye on Cole, who possesses the raw athleticism to play all over the field, giving the defensive staff immense scheme flexibility.
A Surprising Secondary Alignment
In the secondary, safety KJ Bolden enters the season as a highly anticipated Preseason All-American. However, the biggest surprise of fall camp was safety Jones, who put together a standout preseason performance and enters the year as the favorite to start alongside Bolden.
With cornerbacks Robinson and Jones forming an elite tandem, and transfer portal additions strengthening overall depth, Georgia's secondary is poised to be exceptionally tough to throw against—even as talented freshman Justice Fitzpatrick continues to rehab a high school knee injury.
