Paris Saint-Germain has done it again. For the second consecutive weekend, the reigning Ligue 1 champions climbed back from a 2-0 deficit to snatch a point at the death, drawing 2-2 against a stunned Lille side.
With new manager Davide Ancelotti at the helm, Lille seemed destined to secure their second straight victory of the season. Instead, a relentless PSG side produced late injury-time heroics to escape with a hard-fought draw.
Lille Dominates Early
Lille put on a tactical masterclass for the first 80 minutes of the match, largely driven by the evergreen presence of 39-year-old striker Olivier Giroud. The former France international pulled the strings for both of Lille's goals.
First, Giroud set up Hakon Haraldsson, who unleashed a brilliant strike from 20 yards out to put the hosts ahead. Later, in the 84th minute, Dilane Bakwa—making his debut after joining on loan from Nottingham Forest—curled a beautiful left-footed shot into the top corner, courtesy of another Giroud assist.
At 2-0 down with only minutes of normal time remaining, PSG’s domestic struggles looked set to continue. Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer was kept busy, and PSG pushed forward with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia winning dangerous free kicks in the attacking half. Warren Zaïre-Emery also missed a close-range effort just before the late goals began to flow.
The Stoppage-Time Miracle
PSG refused to back down, mounting an unbelievable comeback in added time:
- 91st Minute: Midfielder Vitinha found the top-left corner with an exquisite strike from outside the box, assisted by Mika Godts, breathing life back into the Parisian side.
- 95th Minute: Just four minutes later, Vitinha turned provider, sending in a precise cross from a corner. Captain Marquinhos met the ball in the center of the box, heading it into the bottom right corner to seal the equalizer.
Why It Matters
While the dramatic comeback showcases PSG's mental resilience, it also highlights worrying defensive vulnerabilities.
This is the second week in a row that Paris Saint-Germain trailed 2-0 before battling back to draw 2-2, having done the exact same thing against Rennes in their season opener. Domestically, PSG is still searching for its first win of the campaign, having also lost 1-0 to Lens in the Trophée des Champions earlier this summer.
For Lille, this will feel like a massive missed opportunity to jump ahead in the Ligue 1 standings, but Davide Ancelotti’s squad proved they are serious contenders this season.
